Books

In 1979, the Vehbi Koç Foundation Nursing Fund initiated publishing activities in order to create reference books for nurses. As a result, three books were translated from English to Turkish and provided to nurses and nursing students: Fundamentals of Nursing (1979), Illustrated Manual of Nursing Techniques, and Basic Psychiatric Concepts in Nursing (1981). The first original Turkish book for nurses, İç Hastalıkları Hemşireliği (Internal Medicine Nursing), was published in 1989.

With the founding of SANERC in 1992, the center continued to publish books and handbooks for nurses. Handbooks for the eight basic fields of nursing oriented toward clinicians and nursing students were published between 1995 and 1998. Electrocardiography: ECG Analysis, Diagnosis and Treatment of Arrhythmia was published in 2002. Kadın Sağlığı ve Hastalıkları Hemşireliği El Kitabı (Nurses’ Handbook of Women’s Health and Diseases) (2012) and Hemşirelik Hizmetleri Yönetim El Kitabı (Management of Nursing Services Handbook) (2016) were updated and published by Koç University Press.

The Vehbi Koç Foundation published two books that have shed light on the history of nursing in Turkey: Amiral Bristol Hemşirelik Okulu (A History of the Admiral Bristol Nursing School) in 2012 and Savaşlardan Modern Hastanelere Türkiye’de Hemşirelik Tarihi (The History of Nursing in Turkey from Ottoman Times Until Today) in 2014.

Detail In the nursing profession, it is not only possible to promote developments in nursing education, to target specific behaviors in students, and to provide information in educational activities–which are increasing in quality—but also to protect and improve human health and take action to help patients regain their health through the proper management of nursing services. As a result, it is essential for nurses to have knowledge in the academic dimensions of management. In line with this awareness, the Management of Nursing Services Handbook, which was published in 1993 to integrate management science with nursing services, covers concepts and topics such as viewing management in nursing as a process for the first time, the philosophy of nursing services, standards, the problem solving process, communication, conflict management, calculating the number of personnel, the selection and placement of personnel, and the change process. In the same years, these concepts were covered in the nursing management course. This book regularly updated and improved according to subject-related developments. It is a product of the instructors who offer this course at various universities, the meticulous studies carried out to build on such concepts, and the support provided by SANERC. The Management of Nursing Services Handbook contains information that will allow managers of healthcare institutions and health personnel who are members of healthcare teams to work in harmony as a team and provide better services.

History of Nursing in Turkey from Ottoman Times Until Today (Not for sale)

Publishing House/Published in Koç University Press, 2014
Editor Prof. Dr. Nuran YILDIRIM
Detail The history of nursing in Turkey has been shaped by war. The fact that wounded soldiers continued to pass away due to poor care prompted the Hilal-i Ahmer Association (Turkish Red Crescent) to launch courses to train nurses. While the patient care courses initiated in 1914 were being held, the injuries of the wounded who were sent to Istanbul from the Dardanelles in the first year of World War I were dressed by volunteer women in hospitals. The women learned to stop bleeding, clean and dress wounds, and they started to work at hospitals. This also triggered social change. This book first offers a broad perspective of the nursing profession and then focuses on the history of nursing in Turkey. An extensive archive study has allowed for the discovery of interesting information which is not found in the literature on Turkish nursing history. For the first time, hundreds of archival documents from the Turkish Red Crescent were used as research for this book.

A History of the Admiral Bristol Nursing School (Not for sale)

Publishing House/Published in Yapı Kredi Press, 2012
Editor Gülsevim ÇEVİKER
Detail “The Admiral Bristol Nursing School…looking out from the windows of the building adjacent to the American Hospital in Nişantaşı, you see the bright blue Bosphorus flowing between the Anatolian and European side of Istanbul, stretching from the Marmara Sea to the perpetually shady Black Sea. With thousands of white seagulls the color of sea foam flying over it, crows managing to break the walnuts in their beaks by dropping them onto its roof, the noisy games played by high school girls in its schoolyard, its classrooms filled with organ charts, serum hangers, medical equipment, machines, and mannequins, its smell of a mixture of chalk dust, pencils, erasers, books and notebooks, yet repressed by the smell of the sea, its dormitories inundated with dirty laundry, but still smell like bleach, its lights that shut off early, and windows that sparkle with the reflection of the full moon… a lively natural wonder, like an unparalleled painting, our dear school, our internal light, our home…”

Beginning with a quote by the author Gülsevim Çeviker, this book sheds light on the 79-year history (1920 – 1999) of the Admiral Bristol Nursing School. Çeviker, who graduated from the Admiral Bristol Nursing School and was the principal for several years, offers a comprehensive description of her experience in this area at this time of nursing and nursing education in Turkey.

Fundamentals of Nursing Handbook

Publishing House/Published in Vehbi Koç Foundation Press, 1997
Editor Meliha Atalay
Detail Fundamentals of Nursing Handbook, one of the handbooks in an area of nursing deemed necessary by the Nursing Committee of the Vehbi Koç Foundation as it offers useful information for both nurses and nursing students, consists of six topics and sub-topics. The topics in the book were authored by instructors who teach courses on the basic principles and applications of nursing at various nursing graduate schools and high schools. The primary objective of the book is to offer guidance to nurses for practicing their profession. Deemed a handbook for this reason, this handbook should be viewed more as a complementary tool rather than a fundamental reference work. The book gives equal weight to basic concepts as well as bedside patient care and methods.

Public Health Nursing Handbook

Publishing House/Published in Vehbi Koç Foundation Press, 1998
Editor İnci Erefe
Detail Nowadays, it is widely accepted that the importance of protecting society to achieve success in health care services is undeniable and that enabling such protection and care at the familial and societal levels is the most effective and economic method of doing so. Public health nurses serve as the main representatives of the healthcare system in the community, in the family environment consisting of individuals from all age groups, in special communities such as schools and industries, and in environments such as dispensaries that fight against specific health problems.

The human relations of public health nurses require an intricate service structure which encompasses efforts to maintain the health of healthy individuals, prevent potential risks, and diagnose, treat, and rehabilitate diseases in the earliest stage possible. Nurses are mostly alone when providing care to individuals, families, and groups for whom they are obliged to protect and treat, and they may only receive limited support from the healthcare team. From another perspective, they have the opportunity to freely implement independent nursing functions. They must plan, conduct, and analyze the results of the healthcare of individuals and families to whom they provide services. Prepared by a distinguished team of academics who are experts in public health nursing, this book has been authored in a manner that will support the competent practice of nurses employed in the field of basic health services.

Nurses’ Handbook of Children’s Health and Diseases

Publishing House/Published in Vehbi Koç Foundation Press, 1998
Editor Zeynep Conk
Detail This book was prepared to support the practical knowledge of nurses and students involved in children’s health and disease. For this reason, it consists mostly of information that is quick and easy to use. In the first section of the book, pediatric age diagnosis, calorie requirements in pediatric ages, and admission diagnosis are discussed to help in understanding the developmental changes of different age groups. The second section of the book covers clinical findings regarding frequently encountered diseases and disorders in children’s health, diagnosis and treatment methods, phylaxis, and nursing diagnoses and interventions. In order to facilitate reading, the diseases in this section were listed in alphabetical order. Within the health care system, the only group taken to healthcare institutions by their families are children. This means that nurses and students have the opportunity to share both health and illness-related information with the family. We hope that the fundamental nursing information provided on each page of this book regarding infant and child care is reflected in individual care.

Surgical Nursing Handbook

Publishing House/Published in Vehbi Koç Foundation Press, 1998
Editor Güler Aksoy
Detail Despite the fact that surgical methods were not easily adopted in the treatment of patients until half a century ago, in today’s world, they are commonly used to maintain or regain health, extend life span and increase life quality, enhance organ functions, and most importantly, relieve pain, which is the primary criterion for healing in patients. It is now a widely accepted fact that demonstrating impeccable, knowledgeable, skilled, and reliable pre-operative, operative, and post-operative care is as important as surgical skill and contributes to the success of the intervention. In today’s world, surgical nurses are able to skillfully carry out care interventions in parallel with the rapid development of the age, new knowledge, and technological opportunities by reflecting them in patient care. In line with this understanding, this book, which adopts a team-oriented approach, was prepared in accordance with scientific developments and national needs to serve as a fundamental reference work for surgical nurses involved in the field, to offer guidance, and to assist nurses in their practice.
