Pediatric Palliative Care Nursing Course

Aims

The aim of this course is to enable pediatric nurses who provide palliative care to learn evidence-based best practices for palliative care and to contribute to improving the quality of life of a child/family with a life-threatening illness.

Objectives

Participants who complete this course successfully will be able to:

  • Realize the roles and responsibilities of the pediatric palliative care nurse.
  • Explain the reactions of the child and his/her family toward disease and the hospital based on age.
  • Create evidence-based nursing care plans for palliative care patients with pain and other symptoms
  • Determine the spiritual needs of the child and family.
  • Plan the care of the family in mourning.
  • Communicate effectively with the child and family.
  • Realize ethical and legal issues related to pediatric palliative care.

Duration of the Course

The total number of hours for this course is 21 hours over a period of 3 days. Participants who complete the program successfully receive 21 ANCC credits.

Educators

This course is taught by Koç University School of Nursing faculty members, pediatric palliative care staff who have conducted clinical and/or academic studies, and other educators who have experience in this field.

Course Materials

Course materials are prepared based on evidence-based practices from national and international sources in the related field and updated every year. The materials are given to participants at the beginning of the course.

Success Criteria

There are written examinations at the beginning and end of the course.

Participants must:

  • Score at least 80 out of 100 points on the exam at the end of the course.
  • Participation in all lessons is mandatory—only 10% absenteeism is acceptable.

Certification and Validity Period

The “Certificate of Achievement for Pediatric Palliative Care Nursing” is given to all participants who complete the program successfully. The certificate is valid for five years. The course duration and course subjects are specified in detail on the certificate. The “Certificate of Attendance” is given to the participants who cannot complete the course in accordance with the course success criteria. The “Certificate of Attendance” specifies the duration of the course and all course subjects.

Who Can Participate?

Nurses who work in medical centers, home care units, rehabilitation centers and family health centers and care for infants, children, adolescents and their families with a life-threatening illness can participate in this course.

The course is limited to 30 participants. Please contact SANERC administration for the program fee.
